New York Metropolitan Section Begins New Season With Past Chairman's Night And Third Generation Ro/Ro Paper

The New York Metropolitan Section of The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers opened the 1978-79 season with Past Chairman's Night on September 19, 1978, at the Whitehall Club in New York City. The Section chairman, David A. O'Neil, introduced all the past chairmen present.

 

Harold Smith Appointed General Manager Of Detroit Diesel Allison

Harold L. Smith Jr. has been named general manager of the Detroit Diesel Allison Division, General Motors Corporation; he is also a GM vice president. Mr. Smith replaces Donald J. Atwood, who has been appointed group executive in charge of GM's Electrical Components Group.

Marine Diesel Engineering— A Continuing Education Program

In mid-April 1978, the Department of Engineering at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y., inaugurated a fourweek Marine Diesel Continuing Education course which makes the Academy's new medium- and slow-speed diesel f a c i l i t i e s available to licensed steam engineers.

Ocean Orders Three Cargo Liners From British Shipyard

Ocean Transport & Trading Limited has ordered three cargo liners from Scott Lithgow Limited at a cost of approximately $63 million. Work will start immediately on the ships, and they will be delivered during the second half of 1979 and the first quarter of 1980.

U.S. Steel Orders Colt-Pielstick Engines For Huge Ore Carrier

Two Colt-Pielstick marine engines with associated gearing, supporting equipment and monitoring systems have been ordered from Colt Industries, Fairbanks Morse Engine Division in Beloit, Wis., by United States Steel Corporation of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Wichmann Diesel, Inc. has announced the opening of offices at 2701 Delaware Avenue, Kenner, La. 70062, which serves as base for operations in the U.S., Canada and South America. The parent company, Wichmann Motorfabrikk A/S of Bergen, Norway, was founded in 1903.
